On Friday, March 15, 2013, the Cleveland/Cuyahoga County Workforce Investment Board hosted a “Building a Competitive Workforce!” event at Corporate College East. This highly attended event rolled out the SWAG strategies to our community business leaders, educators, other workforce areas and various organizations in our region. The keynote speaker was the national leader of the workforce system, Jane Oates, Assistance Secretary, U.S. Department of Labor, Employment & Training Administration. On April 9, 2013 Michael B. Colbert, Director, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) issued a letter, an excerpt of which reads: project funding has been allocated for your areas’ “Connecting the Dots from Foster Care to Employment and Independent Living” pilot program. This program will dramatically improve educational, employment and earning outcomes for young people formerly in foster care; prevent and reduce the incidence of early pregnancy; and better support young adults in foster care as they transition into adulthood. In the 4-H Keynotes Newsletter Winter 2013 Edition, the “Foster Care Teens Plan their Future” article, it shares the pivotal role Employment Connection’s Youth Resource Center took in assisting foster care teens in a special career and post-secondary education planning series. Other active partners helping as facilitators came from Baldwin Wallace University, Cuyahoga Community College, Towards Employment and College Now Greater Cleveland.
